Education – NETs Basics Day

The inaugural UKINETs NETS Basics course was held on a sunny September day in Sheffield this year. A multidisciplinary faculty, including UKINETS education committee members and local NETS experts had spent the preceding months planning the event, providing a comprehensive pre-course reading pack, self-assessment tools and a quiz. It was therefore a cohort of well-prepared attendees who arrived at the course ready for their teaching day! This included lectures and discussions on diagnosis and investigation patients with neuroendocrine tumours, the range of management options and the various issues that arise from NETs in different tissues and organs. The aim of these sessions was to help participants, many of whom are not currently directly involved in the care of patients with NETS, gain confidence in describing the pathology and presentation of NETS and in planning initial investigations and patient care. Fortified by an excellent lunch, the participants then split into groups for a series of ‘mock MDT’ sessions where they practiced their newfound skills by discussing a range of cases, facilitated by the teaching faculty. Attendees described the day as an ‘excellent course that met all its objectives’ and a ‘really great day with expert speakers from around the country.’
